All the Wild Horses

All The Wild Horses is a feature documentary about the Mongol Derby, the longest and toughest horse race on the planet. The film was shot August 2012 in Mongolia.

An adventure documentary unlike any other, ALL THE WILD HORSES tells the story of the Mongol Derby, the longest horse race in the world, across 1000 kilometers (650 miles) of epic Mongolian wilderness over nine days in August 2012.

The longest and toughest horse race in the world — 35 competitors, 650 miles of vast Mongolian wilderness, 9 very tough days in August 2012.

On the morning of August 10, 2012, 35 riders from all over the world started the Mongol Derby, an epic multi-horse race across 1000 km (650 miles) of Mongolia’s remotest steppes and deserts. Armed with not much more than a GPS and sleeping bag, the competitors have to find their own way from horse station to horse station, where they change their horses every 40 km.

A recreation of Chinggis Khaan’s legendary empire-busting postal system, the multi-horse race involves 1000 semi-wild horses that live in large herds most of the year and for the race are organized into a mammoth network of horse stations where the competitors change their horse every 40 kilometers.

The participants are completely on their own in the wild, with no back-up other than for absolute emergencies. Bound by very strict weight limits, they are only allowed to take weather gear, sleeping bag and limited food rations. They stay the nights with local nomads or out in the wild, depending how far away from the nearest encampment they happen to be at the end of the day.

In order to tell an authentic story, the filmmakers took part and rode the whole race, filming from horseback along the way. Most of the competitors and race staff, as well as medics and vets happily agreed to appear on camera in various stages of stress or distress. A few actively helped by filming their own journeys on HD cameras and sharing their footage with the filmmakers.

As the drama unfolds over a few very intense days, more and more competitors fall by the wayside, overcome by injuries, accidents, or the extreme mental and physical pressures they find themselves under.

The warm hospitality and kindness of the nomadic herder families, who are always ready to help with food, vodka, airag and of course the handling of the often very wild and unpredictable horses are just as much part of the story as the camaraderie and friendships amongst the competitors, and their rivalries and weaknesses. The epic beauty of the Mongolian wilderness is at once a seductive backdrop and screen-chewing protagonist. This immense, prehistoric landscape is a harsh reminder that should something go wrong — and go wrong it will — you are on your own.
